Smoking is one of the leading causes or morbidity and mortality in Slovenia as well as elsewhere in the world. According to the international classification of diseases, nicotine addiction and withdrawal symptoms classify as the code F-17 in the group of Mental and behavioural disorders due to the use of psychoactive substances. Consequently, this addiction classifies as a disease. Therefore, there’s nothing wrong with smokers asking for help when they want to quit smoking.
The purpose of the Slovenian coalition for tobacco control and public health is to provide smokers with effective and professional help with smoking cessation. We offer counselling and courses by experts from the field of smoking prevention and cessation. All staff members took classes at the CINDI (Countrywide Integrated Non-communicable Disease Intervention) School for Promoting Public Health and Preventing Chronic Non-communicable Diseases in primary care/family medicine at the Institute of Public Health of Republic of Slovenia.
All staff members were trained within the NGO’s Protect Our Health Project. The project is partially funded by the European Union through the European Social Fund. It is performed under the Operational Programme for Developing Human Resources for the period 2007 – 13 and its developmental priorities are “Encouraging the development of NGOs, civil and social dialogue”.
Smoking cessation course “Yes, I’m giving up smoking” by CINDI
The programme is a successful model for smoking cessation among adults, since it combines a series of steps: educating, advising, counselling, a course and participating in debates about myths about smoking and connections between smoking, stress and body weight. The influence the tobacco industry and the media have on the behaviour of the smokers can be seen in advertising and film industry. For better understanding the tobacco addiction, that area is also included in the programme. “Yes, I’m giving up smoking” was designed for all that want to know more about tobacco and harmful effects of smoking as well as for those that want to quit smoking and contribute to better health.
The smoking cessation programme can also be carried out at bigger companies.
